You can start with P3D and have 60 days to toy with it worry free as LM will issue a refund if you are not happy within 60 days.īe aware that many popular planes in FSX don't have a version for P3D yet and may never have one (e.g. You are patient enough, you eventually will be able to get FSX-SE for 5$ during the Steam sale (I got mine years ago for 9.99$ introductory price).

There are plenty of people still use FSX/FSX-SE, plus Dovetail recently leaks info that there is a new sim being developed that is geared toward the entertainment market. So six months down the road if LM release version 4.0 and it's a 64bit version, you will need to pay 200$ again.Īs for better memory management with FSX-SE, some have reported less OOM error, but since I don't use PMDG aircrafts with it, I can't tell. However, the minor release says 3.1 to 3.9 are free update.

As for P3D license, there is also no upgrade pricing for major version release either.

There is no upgrade pricing for PMDG, you need to buy full price again. What do you think, do you have similar experience?ĭoes FSX:SE have any memory management fixes over FSX?Īlso, does anyone know if the likes of PMDG have an 'upgrade' option to get the P3D version cheaper if you already own the FSX version?Įdit: Further question, if I buy a v3 P3d license, and then in 6 months, P3d upgrades to their 64-Bit version, would I have to spent circa $200 again? In my case, I had hope to reduce the number of sims, however because of this finding I still have two sims to maintain. Some foods for thought from my own experience that I want to share. The only product that make the explicit claim of designed for P3D is the GEXP3D product from Flight 1. However, as buyer/user of these products, I now don't know what to make of the label "support P3D". May be they don't need to, but also may be the developer did not do the extra work to take advantage of new capability.Īs a multi-platforms developer, this approach makes sense otherwise development cost will balloon. Curious, I peeked at the timestamps of the files that the installer put into the P3D folder (effects, texture etc.) and I saw dates as old as 2008, which means these are not touched at all recently. This is not limited to ORBX, I have products from other developers which provide installers for P3D, because of my dual sims, I was able to try the same scenery in both, and more often than not, I found that the scenery perform better in FSX. This have me thinking that ORBX products are probably designed for FSX and evolved to be compatible with other FSX derived platforms. To my surprise, they are better in FSX, texture are crisper, details in high LOD are better and better, smoother performance. Recently following a post by a fellow simmer and came across another post at ORBX forum claiming that ORBX products are better in FSX, I pulled out my FSX-SE license, reinstall ORBX again in there. I happen to have P3D v1 all the way to v3, FSX and FSX-SE and have been using ORBX products in P3D for a while, now on v3 (using only those that have compatible installers). Which made me wonder which sim platform is the primary one where this stuffs really shine. ORBX products listed "compatibility" with FSX to P3Dv3, but notice that the products don't claim that they are specifically designed to take advantage of each sim strengths.
